Case Study and Criticism in Urban Design

The course has 4 teaching modules, including case background study, challenge and countermeasure, space analysis, case comparison. Each module is composed of 2 lectures, 1 seminar and 1 presentation. The urban design public space cases vary each year, so the guest professors are different, resulting in a bit modification of course schedules. But the core lectures are the same, including What is Public Space, the Methods of Case Study, the Challenge and the Countermeasure, etc. It is small class teaching, less than 25 students and 6 groups, so that each student can play a role in site survey and have chance to speak in seminars and presentations. The course provides one or two urban design public space types. Each group discusses and chooses the site from one type, sets up survey plan, develops site survey based on lectures and reference books, and studies on the case including quantification, analysis, comparison and comment. Each module requests survey results and group presentation.
